Register a political party

A political party exists only once it is registered with the Constitutional Court. The law requires nationwide representation: at least 7,500 citizens, including at least 150 residents in each province.

The requirements are cumulative: missing one is enough for the application to be rejected.

The requirements are cumulative

The Court has rejected applications with valid signatures below the minimum in just two provinces (Judgment No. 1128/2026), or with illegible or expired identity cards (Judgment No. 867/2023). A shortfall in one requirement is not offset by a surplus in another.

Step by step

  1. Set up a founding committee (optional)

    Between 7 and 21 people may form a founding committee to prepare the registration and ask the President of the Court for accreditation, with proof of the assets and funds available to start.

  2. Wait for accreditation

    The President of the Court decides within 30 days. If granted, the party in formation has six months to apply for registration. If refused, an appeal lies to the Plenary.

  3. Collect the signatures

    Gather the signatures of at least 7,500 citizens over 18, including at least 150 residents in each province, with each signatory’s documents.

  4. Apply for registration

    File the application with the Court Registry. Check the Political Parties Law, or ask the Registry, for the full list of documents to attach.

  5. Receive the decision

    The President of the Court decides. If the application is rejected, you may challenge the decision before the Plenary within 15 days of notification. Registered parties appear on the official list.

Proceedings concerning political parties are free of costs (Law No. 3/08, Art. 15).
