The Vice-President of the Constitutional Court of Angola, Justice Victoria Izata, is taking part in the 1st Meeting of African Women Judges, in Libreville, capital of the Gabonese Republic.

The meeting, which is taking place from 3 to 6 May 2023 under the motto “The Presence of African Women in the Judiciary: Assessment and Prospects”, aims to create a framework for reflection on the obstacles faced by African women judges, and is organised by the Conference of Constitutional Jurisdictions of Africa (CJCA) and the Constitutional Court of the Gabonese Republic, with the support and participation of UNDP and UN Women.

At the event, which was opened by the President of Gabon, Ali Bongo Ondimba, Justice Vitória Izata gave, this Wednesday, the 3rd, a brief presentation on the “overview of the state of gender equality and women’s empowerment in the Judiciary: existing experience”.

In recent years, several African countries have taken measures to appoint more women judges at national level, with the number having increased significantly in countries such as Algeria, Angola, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, South Africa, Tunisia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
