The appellant, convicted of homicide and whose sentence the Supreme Court had reduced to 13 years' imprisonment, lodged an extraordinary appeal on grounds of unconstitutionality, alleging arbitrary deprivation of liberty, excessive pre-trial detention and breaches of the presumption of innocence, in dubio pro reo and human dignity. The Court found the appeal unfounded because the detention issues were untimely at that stage and the judgment under appeal breached no constitutional principle.
