The President of the Constitutional Court, Justice Laurinda Prazeres Monteiro Cardoso, chaired a review meeting with the staff of the Constitutional Court last Friday, 15 December 2023.

During the meeting, the staff unanimously agreed that, in essence, the assessment of 2023 is positive, notwithstanding the fact that some actions were not carried out owing to various constraints encountered.

In this regard, the Workers' Committee, in a message delivered by its Vice-President, Ana Santa Marta, praised the work carried out during the celebrations of the 13th anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of Angola, which included several highlights, in particular the launch of the Constitution for Children and of the Constitution in national languages.

Ana Santa Marta also highlighted the launch, in June, of the academic journal “A Guardiã” and the retreat to the Province of Cuanza Sul, as well as the various recreational and sporting activities held as part of the celebrations of Constitutional Court Day.

The President of the Court thanked all the Justices and staff for their commitment and support in fulfilling their work obligations, and took the opportunity to announce the various actions she intends to undertake next year, which will result in a greater and better capacity for coordination between the different areas.

The Constitutional Court is responsible for dealing with matters relating to prior review, subsequent review and unconstitutionality by omission proceedings; ordinary and extraordinary appeals on grounds of unconstitutionality; proceedings relating to candidacies for President of the Republic, Vice-President of the Republic and Members of the National Assembly; proceedings relating to political parties and coalitions of political parties; and proceedings of an electoral nature, both general and local, among others.

During 2023, as regards its judicial work, the Plenary of the Constitutional Court handed down 82 judgments.
