On Tuesday, 30 January 2024, the President of the Republic swore in João Carlos António Paulino as Justice of the Constitutional Court, following the resolution of the Superior Council of the Judiciary electing him to fill the vacancy left by Simão de Sousa Victor, who retired pursuant to Article 181(4) of the Constitution of the Republic of Angola.

Aged 53, the new Justice of the Constitutional Court holds a law degree from Agostinho Neto University and a postgraduate qualification in Forensic Legal Sciences from Piaget University.

António Paulino has previously served as Deputy Director of the National Institute for Judicial Studies, Appeal Judge at the Luanda Court of Appeal, Member of the Superior Council of the Judiciary and President of the Criminal Chamber of the Luanda Court of Appeal.

The judges of the Constitutional Court are appointed for a non-renewable term of office of seven years and enjoy the guarantees of independence, irremovability and impartiality.
