On Wednesday, 4 June, the Constitutional Court reached the historic milestone of 1,000 Judgments delivered since its institutionalisation in June 2008.
Judgment number 1000, concerning an Extraordinary Appeal on Grounds of Unconstitutionality (relating to habeas corpus proceedings), had as its Rapporteur the Vice-President of the Court, Justice Victória Izata, and thus marks a symbolic moment for the country's constitutional justice, which began with its first Judgment, approved on 30 June 2008, which dealt with a case concerning the formation of an electoral coalition, with Justice Onofre dos Santos as Rapporteur on that occasion.
The milestone now reached represents not merely a number, but the reflection of the continuous work on the constitutional matters examined over the Constitutional Court's 17 years of existence, which has played a fundamental role in safeguarding fundamental rights, guarantees and freedoms, as well as in consolidating the democratic State based on the rule of law.
