The Vice-President, Justice Victória Izata, representing the Constitutional Court of Angola, is taking part, from 20 to 24 April 2026, in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa, in the 2nd High-Level Meeting of Women Leaders of Judicial Bodies in Africa, organised by the Constitutional Court of South Africa with the support of the Conference of Constitutional Jurisdictions of Africa (CJCA).
The event, held as part of the commemorations of the 20 years of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (Maputo Protocol), aims to address, in a coordinated manner, topics such as violence and harassment against women, economic justice and property rights, and sexual and reproductive health, with room also for addressing environmental rights, the impact of new technologies and artificial intelligence, and the challenges posed by customary practices and by judicial systems.
According to the organisers, women leaders of African judiciaries from Sierra Leone, Liberia, Burundi, Chad, Comoros, Senegal, the Gambia, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Malawi, Algeria, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Angola, Namibia, Gabon, Zambia, Madagascar, the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Burkina Faso, Mali and Eswatini, as well as from the UN, are taking part in the event, including judges, prosecutors and other officials responsible for supreme and constitutional justice on the continent.
The holding of the 2nd High-Level Meeting of Women Leaders of Judicial Bodies of Africa constitutes a platform for strategic reflection and jurisprudential dialogue among African women magistrates and aims to consolidate a coherent, progressive and gender-sensitive judicial interpretation on the African continent.
The Vice-President, Justice Victoria Izata, is scheduled to present, on Wednesday the 22nd, the topic “Jurisprudential Protection of Gender Equality in Angola: between Customary Practices and the Effectiveness of Women's Rights at the 20-Year Mark of the Maputo Protocol”.
Justice Maria de Fátima da Silva is also taking part in the event.
