It was with deep sorrow and dismay that the Constitutional Court learned of the passing of His Excellency Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, former President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Angola.
An unavoidable figure in Angolan political and parliamentary life, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos left an indelible mark on decisive moments of national constitutionalism. During the 12 years in which he presided over the National Assembly, he was guided by balance, a spirit of inclusion and a capacity for dialogue, having led structuring processes, most notably the approval of the Constitution of the Republic of Angola in 2010.
His serene demeanour, attentive listening and unceasing pursuit of consensus in the higher interests of the Nation contributed to strengthening Parliament and to consolidating the Democratic State governed by the Rule of Law.
At this moment of pain and mourning, the Constitutional Court bows before his memory and, on behalf of the Justices, the staff and on my own behalf, extends its most heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
The President of the Constitutional Court
Laurinda Jacinto Prazeres
