The Summit of Presidents of the Constitutional and Supreme Courts of the G20 Countries began on Tuesday, 3 September, in Johannesburg, South Africa, with the participation of the President of the Constitutional Court of Angola, Justice Laurinda Prazeres.

Also known as the J20 Summit, the meeting was opened by the President of the Constitutional Court of South Africa, Justice Marisa Maya.

On the first day of proceedings, held in two plenary sessions, the representatives of the constitutional and supreme courts of Turkey, India, Zimbabwe, Brazil, Saudi Arabia and South Africa, as well as the UNESCO delegate, discussed topics relating to the promotion of judicial independence, the accountability of judges and the balance between the use of artificial intelligence and the protection of fundamental freedoms in justice systems.

In statements to the press, the Angolan judge stressed that taking part in the event is an opportunity to discuss and share experiences with the judicial systems of the G20 countries. She highlighted that the initiative favours the strengthening of cooperation mechanisms between neighbouring jurisdictions, promotes the exchange of innovative practices and encourages the adoption of effective solutions used in different contexts in Asia, Europe and America. As an example, she pointed to the use of artificial intelligence, stressing that, despite the different challenges faced by countries, this tool can help to reduce case processing times and ensure swifter decisions.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, 4 September 2025, the President of the Constitutional Court of Angola, a special guest at the event, will be responsible for moderating the session presenting the final resolutions of the Summit. It is hoped that the conclusions adopted at this event of global importance will go beyond words and translate into concrete actions capable of having a positive impact on the lives of citizens who turn to the highest courts of justice.

Justice in Times of Change: Independence, Innovation and Cooperation is the motto of the Summit of Presidents of the Constitutional and Supreme Courts of the G20 Countries.
